Amigurumi Kitten in Spooky Pumpkin

 

Hi everyone!  Halloween is just around the corner and I thought I’d share a little cute project so you can make one for yourself, friends, coworkers, children…etc!  I’m all about creating patterns that are beginner-friendly and doesn’t take too long to make.  Hopefully some of you will have a bit of spare time to crochet this before Halloween!!

Without further ado, lets go! 

ABOUT THIS PATTERN
This pattern is in US crochet terms
This pattern has a number of crocheted parts: cat head, ears, pumpkin, hat with stem, feet, and tail
You will create all parts before sewing together (I find this the easiest)
This pattern is made up in continuous rounds.  DO NOT JOIN at the end of each round

MATERIALS
3.5 mm (or 3mm) Crochet Hook
Any type of yarn in orange, light gray, dark brown, and black
*I used DishieYarn in colors: Clementine, Clarity, Coffee, and Black*
6 mm Safety Eyes
Darning Needle
Scissors
Polyester Stuffing
Black or Dark Drown felt
Fabric Glue
Optional: Mini Bell

ABBREVIATIONS (in US crochet terms): 
MC – magic circle
sts – stitches
slst – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
sc-inc – single crochet increase
sc-dec – single crochet decrease

HEAD – using gray yarn
Make one

R1: MR 5 (5)
R2: (sc-inc) x 5 (10)
R3: (sc, sc-inc) x 5 (15)
R4: (2sc, sc-inc) x 5 (20)
R5 + R6: sc 20 (20)
R7: (3sc, sc-inc) x 5 (25)
R8: sc 25 (25)
R9: (3sc, sc-dec) x 5 (20)
R10: (2sc, sc-dec) x 5 (15)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

EARS – using gray yarn
Make two

R1: MR 3 (3)
R2: (sc-inc) x 3 (6)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

TAIL – using gray yarn
Make one

R1: ch 8
R2: skip the first st from hook, slst along the back (7)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

FEET – using gray yarn
Make two

R1: MR 7 (7)
R2: sc 7 (7)  (<– I later realized later that adding this round gives more dimension)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

COLLAR – using black yarn
Make one

R1: ch 24 (24)
Fasten off and leave a bit of tail for tying
*add mini bell to the middle of collar*

PUMPKIN HAT – using orange yarn
Make one

R1: MR 6 (6)
R2: (sc-inc) x 6 (12)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

PUMPKIN STEM – using dark brown yarn
Make one

R1: ch 4
R2: along the back, skip the first st from hook, crochet one sc in the first st, one hdc in the second st, and one hdc in the third st
Fasten off, leaving a bit of tail for sewing

PUMPKIN – using orange yarn
Make one

R1: MR 6 (6)
R2: (sc-inc) x 6 (12)
R3: (sc, sc-inc) x 6 (18)
R4: (2sc, sc-inc) x 6 (24)
R5: (3sc, sc-inc) x 6 (30)
R6 – R9: sc 30
R10: (3sc, sc-dec) x 6 (24)
R11: sc 24 (24)
R12: (2sc, sc-dec) x 6 (18)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

PUMPKIN FACE – using black felt

Simply cut out two triangle for eyes and a mouth
Use fabric glue to attach onto pumpkin

ASSEMBLY:
Use a darning needle for sewing

Here are the steps I take to assemble my kitten:
1) Sew both ears on head (I sewed mine between R4 and R7 of head)
2) Sew pumpkin stem to pumpkin hat
3) Sew pumpkin hat to top of head
4) Secure safety eyes between R7 and R8
5) (If not already done yet) Glue pumpkin face to pumpkin
6) Sew both legs to pumpkin
7) Sew tail to back of pumpkin
8) Stuff head and pumpkin piece with polyester fibre
9) Sew head piece to pumpkin, body piece
10) Tie collar to neck of kitten

Fin ~ 

I made this little pumpkin kitten as a standalone decoration, but of course, you are welcome to add to it so that it becomes a keychain, mobile, etc.
